Back squats and dead lifts

The only two barbell movements I can do right now due to my shoulder injury. By the way, 90% of my workouts include barbells. I’m gonna have a strong lower back and legs. If anyone knows how to spice up those two exercises so I can maintain my speed and power, I’m open to almost anything. Any ideas?

Injured again

I was diagnosed with an AC (acromioclavicular) sprain a month ago, and I was forced to back off any overhead movements until the inflammation went away and I could strengthen my shoulder up a bit. Well, two weeks ago, I was cleared to go back to exercise and started making some improvements with overhead squats and snatch. Until yesterday. My shoulder flared up after I did a few sets of push press, and it’s been hurting ever since. Even with icing, the pain is still there in the smallest movements. I believe it’s just suprascapular impingement, but it means I won’t be doing any Olympic lifting or overhead work for a while. It looks like I’m back to my old regimen of running, squats and deadlifts until my shoulder heals. I’m not happy about it, but I can’t just stop everything because of one minor injury.

I hate rest days

Why does it seem like every rest day I take, I do nothing but watch California Strength videos and just wanna go lift some heavy weights? I really need to get stronger though. I’m nowhere near where I want to be with my strength.

Recovery Supplements

I’m debating trying Progenex or one of the other recovery supplements out there. I’ve started doing multiple workouts a day along with physical activity classes and intramurals. I feel fine if I can get a meal between workouts or events, but the next day I’ll feel miserable even with proper sleep and hydration. Would Progenex or other supplements even help?

I GOT A JOB!!!

I got a job as a Facility Assistant at my university’s gym! I’m one step closer to my dream job (Personal Trainer).

Apr 5
I finally got my first pair of dedicated lifting shoes. These are the most expensive shoes I’ve ever bought ($150) , but after one day in the gym, I can tell I’m gonna be making some awesome improvements with them. I had to get them because I have long femur, so ass-to-grass squatting is a bit tough on my lower back. Plus, these shoes just look badass! If you’re gonna order crossfit gear, go to rogue fitness. They have great customer service, great products, and it’s a completely American company.

Dave Castro has lost it

4 minute AMRAP

  • 15 Thrusters
  • 15 Chest to bar pullups
  • For every 3 rounds you complete, you go for another 4 minutes

Good day at the gym

I really don’t know where all my motivation came from today.

  • I went in with the plan of doing the DT Hero WOD (5 rounds: 12 deadlifts, 9 hang cleans, 6 push jerks at 155#), but since I spent the week recovering from an AC sprain, the jerks weren’t too strong. Instead, I just did the deadlifts and hang cleans really fast for five rounds.
  • Next up, I conquered overhead squats. I’ve been working on mobilizing my hips for squatting with overhead squatting as my goal.
  • Since I was on a roll with squatting, I decided to set a back squat PR. I’ve never really done squatting PR’s, but this one was 315#. I felt like I could’ve done more, but I didn’t have a spot. And yes, it was Ass To Grass. Those are the only ones to count.
  • Everything else was just shoulder strengthening and rehab
  • And I did all of it on an empty stomach. I’m a beast.

That was my morning at the gym. If anybody wants to tell me what a proper back squat weight should be for a guy that’s 6’6” and 250, I’d really appreciate it. Any guesses?

The end of my bulk

I just ate nearly a pint of cheesecake ice cream with almonds and chocolate chips to commemorate the end of my first bulk and the beginning of my first cut. DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT THE PROPER WAY TO BULK. YOU STILL EAT HEALTHY. I just wanted to eat some ice cream before I start this cut. I’m gonna be doing mostly Crossfit style workouts and trying to do a 40/50/10% split for carbs/protein/fat. I’m trying to lose some size while maintaining or increasing my strength. If it doesn’t work, at least I had some good ice cream in there somewhere.
